The Land of Fire & Ice

North Iceland is the ideal location for yogis, adventurers and other travel enthusiasts who desire an authentic experience at the heart of this magical country.

Away from the mainstream tourism of Reykjavik, we’ll take you North to the town of Akureyri, Iceland’s second largest city (population = 18,000). Once one of Iceland’s best kept secrets, Akureyri has been voted #1 European Destination by Lonely Planet several times.

Akureyri’s mild climate on the longest fjord in the country and its close proximity to the Arctic Circle make it a must-see and must-experience destination.

Majestic landscapes, Icelandic horses, waterfalls, secret hikes off the beaten path, volcanic craters and geothermic nature baths are just some of the features offered. The summer season offers its own additional gifts – the midnight sun, whale watching and riding the Icelandic horses to name a few.

In partnership with the only modern yoga and wellness center in Northern Iceland, we invite you to join us on an adventure you will never forget!

Your retreat package includes housing, meals, guided excursions to the best sights of the North, plus a morning yoga class each day at the wellness center.

The Experience

Each morning, after breakfast, we will prepare for the day’s adventures with an all-levels yoga class. Our hosts will pick us up at each apartment (all within a few blocks) and we’ll be transported across the fjord to our beautiful yoga and wellness center that overlooks the mountains and water.

Classes will be welcoming to all, and if you prefer, the center has a relaxation room, beautiful views, a dry sauna and jacuzzi available to our group. After class, we’ll be transported to lunch, and after this, we’ll head out for our day’s activities!  If you decide any morning to sleep in and skip a class, you can simply meet us at lunch which is just a couple blocks walk from your home. Our afternoon and evening adventures together will include:

  • Hrisey Island-A lovely ferry ride to spend an afternoon picturesque exploration and hike of Hrisey Island. Situated at 66 degrees North, just a stone’s throw from the Arctic Circle, Hrisey is considered one of the “Power” places in Iceland. This can’t be easily explained, so we’ll offer some moments of pause to sit and feel this special planetary vortex energy.

  • A local exploration of Akureyri, learning about the history and folklore. We’ll drive along the fjord and make several stops including visits to some special places and hidden waterfalls,  You’ll feel like you’ve been transported back in time, or onto the most spectacular movie set designed by mother nature herself! On some weeks we are able to offer a special dinner at a local farm.

  • Icelandic Horseriding!  the Icelandic Horse is truly unique to Iceland and even boasts a unique gait called the “tolt”.  Beginner riders will be in one group and enjoy a breathtakingly beautiful experience of the spring fields of Iceland.  More experienced riders will have the opportunity to trot, canter and tolt through the countryside!  We’ll learn about these beautiful animals and be treated to hot beverages and Icelandic treats afterwards. *note: If you are uncomfortable on horses, we can offer whale watching as an alternative!

  • A full day adventure to Myvatn – an amazing geothermic region that will take you from the fjord, through the mountains, to the lava fields.  You’ll experience the rolling fields of Icelandic sheep contrasted with the barren lunar landscapes that the astronauts used to train for the first lunar landing in the 60’s! Our day concludes with a visit to the thermal baths of the North.  In the front is a modern cafe, showers and lockers  … when you exit the back, you enter large natural pools of geothermic waters bubbling from mother earth herself.  With a high concentration of natural minerals, Icelanders often credit these waters with their health and longevity that is much higher than the norm.  We’ll watch the sun set, and the galaxies of stars arise.  A sight to behold!

  • We are also extremely fortunate to be in Northern Iceland for the best time to view the Midnight Sun and will take a late night excursion on the best evening for viewing this phenomenon.

  • On two afternoons you’ll have the choice between a second yoga practice and relaxation time at the Wellness Center or adding on an additional excursion/exploring the local area.

Hi friends! My name is Jen and I’m the owner of Flight Room Seattle. My absolute FAVORITE part of my job is leading retreats and I cannot wait to experience the magic of North Iceland with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Akureyri and the retreat?

If heading directly to the retreat, most of you will depart your home city on Friday to arrive Saturday early morning in Reykjavik (KEF = Keflavik International.) From here, you will either drive, or book an easy 45 minute flight from Reykjavik Domestic Airport to Akureyri.

Your return will be the following Saturday morning from Akureyri – Reykjavik domestic, then a transfer to the International airport (Keflavik) and back home.

Some of you will choose to add extra days on your own in Reykjavik before or after the retreat dates which offers more options. This is ALSO the time of year that driving from Reykjavik to Akureyri is possible and may be a great choice if you want to join a few others and make the 6-7 hour drive and do some sightseeing along the way.

Once you arrive in Akureyri, all of your transportation will be provided until you’re returned to the Akureyri airport the following Saturday.

Is this an aerial retreat? What will the yoga classes be like?

This is *not* an aerial retreat and is focused primarily on exploring North Iceland with some great mat-based yoga built in each day to offer additional relaxation. All classes will be gently heated (“warm yoga”) and accessible to all ranges of yoga experience, including brand-new beginners. Each class will be thoughtfully built around that day’s activity (ie: if we’re hiking in the afternoon, we’ll focus on warming our body for lots of walking during our morning practice.) On the two days we do not have excursions planned, an afternoon restorative practice will be offered.

All yoga classes are of course optional and you’re welcome to sleep in or use the Wellness Center facilities instead.

What are the accommodations like?

The shared apartments are some of the nicest in Akureyri. They feature modern design, central temperature control, comfortable beds with down comforters, full kitchens and common living areas, and natural, pristine drinking water straight out of the tap. Piping hot water for the showers and Jacuzzi’s is tapped from below, heated by the earth itself. An array of common breakfast items, fruit, coffee and selection of teas are also provided. The apartments are just a 10-12 minute walk to the town center, where we’ll have many of our meals together.

What is the food like?

Contrary to popular belief, the food in Iceland is abundant and delicious. The cafe where we’ll have most of our lunches and dinners typically offers two fresh soups, fresh breads, a salad bar and hot entrees at every meal.  Locally grown potatoes, fresh-caught white fish and the famous Icelandic lamb rotate on the menu as well.

Icelandic farmers take pride in their connection to the land, and many of the dishes that guests enjoy are made with locally grown, farm-to-table ingredients. Iceland has amazing greenhouses, so you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the variety and quality of the food which includes vegetarian and vegan options.  Should you wish to venture out on your own, Akureyri is home to several cafe’s, coffee houses, juice bars, wine bars, and several other more formal restaurants for a special night on the town.

How should I dress?

In June, the average high is 55 and the average low is 44 (think March/April Seattle temps.) While light clothing is often all you need, always be prepared for both cold and wet weather at all times of the year. The weather can change on a dime. Icelanders often say, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 15 minutes.” We recommend bringing pants or jeans, a warm jacket or coat, and warm hat, scarf or balaclava in case it’s unseasonably chilly. Also recommended is a water and wind resistant outer layer (jacket and pants) and warm shoes or boots that can get wet.

Finally, bring a bathing suit as bathing in the geothermally heated pools and backyard Jacuzzis is a favorite Icelandic pastime, whether to to gather with friends or to take in the majestic surroundings.

What if I don’t know anyone else attending the retreat?

Most of our retreat attendees register as individuals and are not traveling with a friend or partner, so you’ll be in good company. If you’re reserving a shared room, we will take care of matching you with another student traveling alone. One of the biggest benefits of the retreat experience is meeting new friends!

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellations (for any reason, including Covid concerns) made more than 180 days before arrival are fully refundable. Cancellations made between 61 and 179 days are 50% refundable and cancellations made 60 days or less before arrival are not refundable.

I have other questions.
